5-HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid that is found in the body at low levels. When the body metabolizes tryptophan, another amino acid, 5-HTP is formed. Then, 5-HTP is converted to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps in controlling appetite, mood and anger. In modern living where stress levels are high, the lifestyle and dietary practices of many people causes obesity, sugar craves, depression, headaches and even muscle pains. All of this is a result of lowered levels of serotonin within the brain. Because 5-HTP is the intermediate chemical between tryptophan and serotonin, 5-HTP is marketed as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant and sleeping aid in the United States and many other countries. The source of supplementary 5-HTP comes from the seeds of a shrub called Griffonia simplicifolia.
Although 5-HTP may be relatively new to the health food industry of United States, it has been widely available in many European countries as a medicine since the 1970s and much research has been performed on this herbal supplement over the past three decades. As far back as 1975, studies have shown that the administration of 5-HTP could reduce food intake significantly in obese rats. Many clinical studies have also demonstrated that 5-HTP produced good results in promoting and maintaining sleep for those who experiences insomnia. The vital benefit with 5-HTP in the treatment of insomnia is that the quality of sleep is improved. This effect is also observed in those who do not experience insomnia. 5-HTP is also beneficial for any general aches and stiffness.
There is no recommended daily intake value for 5-HTP, though some sources state that 5-HTP can be safely consumed as a nutritional supplement at a daily dosage of up to 100mg. Always consult a doctor before administrating any new supplements.
