Often referred to as vitamin B8, inositol is a naturally occurring nutrient that helps the body maintain a healthy metabolism. However, in actual fact, inositol is not categorized to be a vitamin because it can be produced by the human body. It plays a major role in preventing fats to collect in the liver and helps process nutrients into energy efficiently. Inositol may also promote healthy hair growth and is known as a “brain food” as it is the nutrient which nourishes the brain properly.
Since inositol is naturally synthesized by the human body, there is no real evidence to indicate that adding more inositol to one’s diet will boost any health benefits. However, the important thing to know is that a lack of the nutrient may lead to conditions such as constipation, high cholesterol, vision problems and general health of the eyes, and hair loss. Because inositol is present in many common foods like cereals with high bran content, nuts, beans and fruits (especially high levels in oranges and cantaloupes), most people do not need to take inositol as a supplement. However, preliminary results of studies have shown that inositol supplementation yield promising effects for those suffering from clinical depression (problems such as bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar depression). Consequently, doctors often suggest 500mg of inositol twice per day for patients who suffer any of the above conditions. According to some reports, inositol may strengthen the cells of the hair by helping it retain moisture; it is an ingredient in some shampoo formulas.
There is no Recommended Daily Intake value for inositol since it is more easily obtained by eating a sensible and balanced diet each day. No toxicity data has been reported for inositol. However, it should be noted that people with chronic renal failure show elevated levels and should not take inositol unless advised by their doctors.
