Pyridoxal-5 Phosphate

Pyridoxal-5 Phosphate, often abbreviated as P5P, is the active form of vitamin B6. This active form allows the body to absorb and utilize it much more efficiently than the inactive pyridoxine HCL form, especially since some people have problem converting the inactive form into the usable P5P. Thus, it is more effective to use P5P as a supplement instead. Vitamin B6 is known as the master vitamin for processing amino acids because it breaks them apart to produce hormones such as serotonin, melatonin and dopamine.

Our bodies also use P5P to break down other things such as fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to make red blood cells and antibodies, to help both the digestive and nervous systems function properly and to maintain healthy skin. Those who are deficient in vitamin B6 or have trouble converting pyridoxine HCL to the active P5P form may experience depression, nervousness, slow learning, dermatitis and acne, dental cavities, hair loss, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscular weakness, amongst other symptoms.

Benefits of P5P include premenstrual syndrome relieve, immunity boost and protection against the hardening of arteries. Studies have also shown that P5P may benefit pregnant or nursing mothers and their unborn children. Because P5P is the only form of vitamin B6 that the fetus can use, it allows the baby to effectively use this vital nutrient. On the other hand, the use of the pyridoxine HCL form may result in irreversible central nervous system damage.

The daily suggested dosage of P5P is 75mg. Some doctors will use P5P as a nutritional treatment of up to 100mg per day. However, it is recommended that pregnant and lactating women do not consume over 75mg of P5P each day.
