Tribulus terrestris, also known as “puncture vine”, is a flowering plant that is native to warm temperature and tropical regions round the world, particularly in southern Europe, southern Asia, throughout Africa and in northern Australia. It is a weedy species and can thrive even in desert climates and poor soil. The name “puncture vine” was dubbed because the seeds of the plant resemble a bull’s head with “horns” that are sharp enough to puncture bicycle tires and cause painful injury to bare feet.
Over thousands of years, tribulus has been used in Europe, India and China for medicinal purposes. It has been employed as an herbal supplement diuretic, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and as a mood enhancing tonic. Nowadays, tribulus is most well-known for its ability in improving libido and treating infertility problems in both men and women. Studies have shown that tribulus can boost the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the body. LH is the hormone that signals the body to start making testosterone and thus, enhance sex drive. What’s more, research has also indicated that tribulus increases sperm count.
Because it indirectly increases testosterone levels, tribulus is also popular among athletes. Bodybuilders have interest in supplementing their diet with tribulus as many are experiencing increased muscle size, stamina and strength. Studies have shown that consuming a combination of tribulus, DHEA and adrostenedione supplements is an effective way of raising testosterone levels, particularly for increasing strength and building muscle mass.
The major benefit of tribulus is the fact that it is a natural herbal extract and not a hormone itself. The daily recommended dosage is 750 – 1,250 mg divided throughout the day and taken with meals to avoid an upset stomach
